CO2 Modelling at Jaguar Land Rover

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), a British multinational automobile manufacturer best known for producing luxury vehicles and sport utility vehicles has recently implemented Anaplan to model its CO2 emissions. For the automotive industry as a whole, CO2 emissions have a wide implication due to having to adhere to specific targets for the new cars they sell. Exceeding these limits can cause hefty fines for the company. On the contrary, selling electric vehicles provides the company with carbon credits as a source of income.
JLR previously managed this process in MS Excel, spending two weeks of the month gathering sales volume data as well as litigation rules across 13 markets to model the financial impact on the business in relation to the carbon credits and costs associated with the vehicles sold. This was made more complex by carbon emissions working on a calendar year time period versus JLR’s fiscal year.
JLR partnered with Anaplan and Bedford Consulting’s expert team to model this process within the platform, the data is now available on day one of the month, allowing the planning team time back to model scenarios and focus on agile decision-making.
In addition, the sales and CO2 teams are now using the same set of data, providing one source of truth. Using Anaplan has allowed data-driven decision-making to best manage portfolios of products in different countries as well as being able to manage and mitigate risks to the business, All whilst enabling connected planning with ESG, sales, supply chain and financial data where the CO2 model is also connected to other planning models within JLR.
The output and decisions the CO2 model provides can now be presented monthly to the CEO, with the team able to feel confident in the data that they are working with.
“It’s been great, we had a fairly new CO2 modelling team, working in Excel and they managed to prove the business case in Anaplan very quickly. Discussions can now be held at a Board level to determine how we can work best, and which cars we should build to remain compliant, so it feeds into both our forecasting and our supply chain models.” Matthew Dickerson, Planning Systems Manager
